Each month we look for events in and around the Raleigh area that promote health, wellness, and an active lifestyle. These “Healthy Happenings” serve as excellent ways to engage with your community while getting in a great workout. Most of the time, these events also support a great cause. It’s a win/win/win! If you’re looking for some fun things to do in Raleigh in October 2019, look no farther. This month is chock FULL of great opportunities to get out and be active as we welcome cool fall weather.

Saturday, October 5th – Run for Their Lives 5K
SAFE Haven for Cats is celebrating their 25th anniversary with a big, family-friendly celebration of all things CAT on Saturday, October 5. Come for the 5k and stay for the Cat Fest!! The race will start and finish at SAFE Haven for Cats and you will have an opportunity to visit with all the cats and kittens on Race Day! There will be vendors, tours of the shelter and more so come enjoy a day of family fun.
Join fellow animal lovers in warm-ups before tackling a unique course that features some long grades up and down, a view of a geese-filled lake and a challenging start and finish. Lace-up your kicks with SAFE Haven for Cats to raise money for homeless cats.
The event includes a timed 5K race and an non-timed 5K Fun Run / Walk. Dogs can run/walk with their owners in the Fun Run and strollers are welcome too.

Saturday, October 5th – Race 13.1
Back for its eighth year, Race 13.1 Raleigh – Fall half marathon, 10k, and 5k returns to the City of Oaks on October 5, 2019! The race will proceed through three beautiful greenway sections: Mine Creek Greenway, House Creek Greenway and Crabtree River Greenway, and runners will enjoy the new downhill finish as they race down Gates Street. With an average temperature of just 54 degrees at race start, this is a perfect event to kick off your fall race season!

Saturday, October 12th – Triangle Run/Walk for Autism
Join the 21st annual Triangle Run/Walk for Autism at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, on Halifax Mall in downtown Raleigh!
The Triangle Run/Walk for Autism will have something for everyone! A 5K competitive race, 5K noncompetitive run, and a recreational 1-mile run/walk. Prizes of $250 will be awarded for the top male and female runners!
The family-friendly event will also offer activities for children, music, refreshments, and vendor space where local support resources are showcased.

Saturday, October 12th – Oktoberfest 4 Miler
The nOg Run Club, creators of the fairly epic St. Paddy’s 4 Miler and World’s Largest Flip Flop 1K, invite you to join us for the eighth running of the Oktoberfest 4 Miler. Don your best lederhosen and dirndl for a day of running and friendly fun in downtown Raleigh .
Free entertainment for the children! Along with the live music, this is a perfect way to keep your little ones entertained during the 4 Miler.
The 150 meter kids run will start at 10:45am with all children receiving a medal after crossing the finish line.

Saturday, October 12th – The Cupcake Run at Brier Creek
The “sweetest run in Raleigh” is more than a run – it’s a party for the whole family! The 5k run/walk is stroller-friendly and pet-friendly so don’t worry about getting a babysitter or a dogsitter – there is something for everyone.

Saturday, October 19th – ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk
The 2019 ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk – Raleigh features a 5K run/walk, 1 mile walk, Kids’ Superhero Dash for Dad, and virtual Snooze for Dudes program. Stick around for the family-friendly post-race celebration! Nashville recording artist and ZERO Spokesperson Jimmy Charles will perform his hit Superman, the ZERO Cancer anthem dedicated to prostate cancer patients and survivors. Muddy the Mudcat from the Carolina Mudcats baseball team will be making a special appearance. Participants will receive shirts, free food, and the opportunity to connect with others who are impacted by prostate cancer.

Saturday, October 19th – Making Strides Walk
Come together with survivors, caregivers, men and women from all walks of life who are passionate about saving lives from breast cancer. Celebrate your shared efforts. Inspire each other to carry on. And take comfort in the knowledge that because of your dedication, no one walks alone.

Saturday, October 19th – 5 Factors 5K
Come out to the beautiful Dorothea Dix Park on October 26, 2019 at 11AM to walk or run in the 5 Factors Fund 5K Walk & Run. Proceeds from the 5K will support Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina. The “5 Factors Fund 5K Walk & Run” brings together new and lifelong runners to showcase the positive effects of an active lifestyle. Come out to the beautiful Dorothea Dix Park on October 26th to walk or run a 5K or 1-mile course while learning about how the simple act of walking or running is part of Five Protective Factors that are linked to a lower incidence of child abuse and neglect.
